Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (450g) French bread, cubed
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups (480ml) milk
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1g) salt
  • 2 cups (300g) fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup (30g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (55g) unsalted butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.
  2. Arrange bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Press down gently to ensure all bread is soaked.
  5. Sprinkle blueberries evenly over the top.
  6. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and flour. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Sprinkle the crumb mixture over the blueberries.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  9. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Make-Ahead Tip: Assemble the casserole the night before (up to step 7), cover, and refrigerate. Let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before baking in the morning.
  • For Best Results: Use day-old or slightly stale French bread for optimal custard absorption.
  • Serving Suggestion: Drizzle with warm maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar for an extra special touch.
