Description
A warm, comforting treat with flaky dough, tender apple filling, and luscious vanilla glaze.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup (120ml) warm milk (110-115°F)
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 package) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 3 cups (360g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 4 medium apples (about 500g), peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, granulated sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy. Add softened butter, salt, and eggs to the yeast mixture. Mix well. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Make the Apple Filling: While the dough is rising, prepare the apple filling. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook for 8-10 minutes, or until apples are tender. Stir in lemon juice and let cool slightly.
- Assemble the Kringle: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle (approximately 12×18 inches). Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on all sides. Carefully roll the dough up tightly, starting from one long side. Pinch the seam to seal. Transfer the roll to the prepared baking sheet. Shape the roll into an oval or ring shape, bringing the ends together and pinching to seal. Using scissors or a sharp knife, make cuts about 1 inch apart along the outside of the ring, cutting about halfway through the dough. Gently turn each slice slightly to expose the filling.
- Bake and Glaze: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Prepare the Vanilla Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired consistency. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled kringle. Slice and serve.
