Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  6. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a 12×8 inch rectangle.
  7. In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon for the coating.
  8. Brush the melted butter over the dough. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
  9. Cut the dough into 6-8 strips. Stack the strips on top of each other, then cut the stack into 6-8 equal pieces.
  10. Arrange the dough pieces vertically in the prepared loaf pan.
  11. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  12. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown. If the top starts to brown too quickly, tent with foil.
  13. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
