Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds (approx. 1.36 kg) sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup (approx. 120 ml) milk
  • 1/4 cup (approx. 56g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 cup (approx. 50g) granulated sugar

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup (approx. 120g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (approx. 200g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (approx. 113g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 cup (approx. 100g) chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Boil the sweet potatoes until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain very well.
  3. In a large bowl, mash the sweet potatoes until smooth.
  4. Add the milk, melted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, ginger, and granulated sugar to the mashed sweet potatoes. Mix until well combined.
  5. Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and brown sugar.
  7. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  8. Stir in the chopped pecans.
  9. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture.
  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is heated through.
  11. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Make Ahead: Prepare the sweet potato base and topping separately, refrigerating until ready to bake.
  • Ensure Dry Potatoes: Drain sweet potatoes thoroughly after boiling to prevent a watery casserole.
  • Cold Butter for Topping: Use very cold butter for the streusel to achieve the best crumbly texture.
